项目摘要

今年度は研究計画の2項目にあたる「クィアの開花―1940年代」で取り上げる作家のうち、Gore VidalのThe City and the Pillarの文献調査を行い、日本アメリカ文学会東北支部3月例会にて研究発表を行った。本作はアメリカ文学史上初めて同性愛を肯定的に扱った作品として注目されるが、同性愛についての単なるカミングアウト作品ではなく文学的価値が見出せることを分析し、作品の主題を考察した。それまでのクィア文学の伝統としてあった「潜ませて書く」ということを覆し、ゲイ業界の事情を明るみにし、クィア性の可視化を果たすという斬新さを見せていた。男性同士の性描写、ホモエロティシズムの露呈はアメリカ国内では酷評されたのだが、海外のゲイ作家たちは本作を支持し、評価したことを明らかにした。主題の考察としては、同性愛を「肯定的」に扱っているとする具体的な表現から、同性愛の性質を分析した。主人公の親友にだけ寄せる愛については作中の表現だけでなく、作者Vidal自身が古代ギリシアで「天上愛」とされた同性愛に憧れていたことからもその性質が推察できるとした。また、同性愛への罪意識も多く描かれている要因として、アメリカ社会全体が異性愛のみ容認する風潮だけでなく、舞台となった南部の町の「家族」や「共同体」とのつながりで生じる苦悩が根幹にあることを明らかにした。しかし、本研究の本章での目的は「CapoteのOther Voices, Other Roomsも取り上げて、2作品から性的マイノリティを意識するようになった40年代アメリカのクィアの捉え方を考える」としているので、今後は2作品の比較などを行って本章の目的を達成させる。また、本研究ともかかわる内容で1960年代のアメリカ・クィア文学も行い、ヴェトナム戦争を背景に人種、学歴、性といった様々な差別が生じるアメリカ社会の闇について迫った。
