本研究は、「日本」「沖縄」「国家」を深く問い、東アジアでも盛んに議論されながらも、未だ総体的な評価が与えられていない1960年から72年までの復帰運動については総体的に研究するものである。そのための方法として、第一に、沖縄での復帰運動と反復帰論を多様な「沖縄」創出の試みであったと読み替え、それぞれの「沖縄構想」を抽出する。第二に、日本「本土」で現れた沖縄返還についての議論を全般に取り上げ、本土側の「沖縄構想」を整理・分析する。第三に、韓国の民衆と在日朝鮮人の沖縄返還についての議論を分析し、外から見られた復帰運動像や沖縄像を提示することで復帰運動と東アジアの関係を明らかにする。そうすることで最終的に「東アジア」の観点も含めて復帰運動を多元的な「沖縄構想」の場として捉えていく。2022年度は、60年代に沖縄で展開した復帰運動と反復帰論に関する資料を収集し、復帰運動と反復帰それぞれの多様な「沖縄構想」を明らかにし、比較検討を行った。収集した資料としては、八重山諸島などの離島を含めた復帰運動資料、復帰協会長・屋良朝苗日誌、全逓信労働組合沖縄、沖縄県労働組合協議会、全沖縄軍労働組合などの運動資料、『沖縄タイムス』『琉球新報』の関連記事、新川明、岡本恵徳、川満信一、仲宗根勇などの反復帰論関連資料などである。また必要な資料全てではないが、日本本土でも出版された雑誌、『中央公論』『現代の眼』『自由』『地方自治』『潮』『展望』『文化評論』『民主文学』『法学セミナー』などでの沖縄返還ついての記事の収集も一部行った。
