本研究の目的は、高等学校の英語科検定教科書を活用しながら、教室内あるいはオンラインで取り組むことができる、SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals: 持続可能な開発目標）をテーマとした具体的な課題解決型言語活動を提案することである。研究計画は、次の通りである。まず、高等学校の英語科検定教科書で扱われている題材を、単元ごとに SDGs 17 のゴールに分類し、その結果を基に、教科書による学習と関連させた SDGs をテーマとする課題解決型言語活動を作成する。さらに、作成した課題解決型言語活動を、高等学校の生徒を対象に教室内あるいはオンラインで実施し、生徒の英語に対する取り組みや動機付け、SDGs への関心や理解にどのような変化があるかを、アンケート調査で明らかにする。その結果を踏まえ、高等学校で実施可能な SDGs を扱った課題解決型言語活動の提案をする。2022年度は、高等学校「英語コミュニケーションⅠ」の英語科検定教科書（平成30年文部科学省告示の学習指導要領に基づいて編纂された全24冊）で扱われている題材を、単元で取り扱うテーマごとに分類し、SDGs との関連性を精査した。その成果を論文としてまとめ、実用英語教育学会の紀要 (SPELT JOURNAL) に投稿し掲載された。英語科検定教科書で、SDGsがどのように単元の内容や言語活動と関連付けて扱われているかを明らかにしたことで、さまざまな社会の課題に向き合うことができる生徒の育成に向けて、教科書を用いたSDGsの教育の可能性を示唆した。
