グローバル化とともに、東京一極集中に代表される都市化の大きな市場の力がわが国の経済成長を牽引してきた。今後も都市集積の経済による大都市集中は進行していくものと予測されているが、コロナ禍のなか地球環境・都市環境の変化や地域間格差や都市内部における所得格差が深刻になりつつある。このことを踏まえて、「空間経済理論の再構築」を中心に研究を遂行する。具体的には、空間経済学を代表する理論を再検討し、一般的な理論の定式化を目指す。また、「中国の近年の経済発展のモデル」を開発し、理論と実証面から分析を行う。高齢化社会における経済地理学のモデルについて多角的に分析することによって、政策的提言を行う。また、空間経済学の観点から、コロナ禍における観光産業の分析を理論と実証の観点から行い、望ましい地域経済政策を導き出す。また、固定資産税における地域間競争がもたらす帰結についての研究を行い、計量経済分析を行う。そして、京都市のデータをもとにして、居住空間のおける人種差別の問題を計量経済学的に分析し、望ましい都市経済政策を導き出す。さらに、都市における知識創造とイノベーション、外国人労働力の流入と知識創造、多様な多国籍企業、環境汚染や地域公共財などについて、その効果を分析し、都市内部の空間構造、外国人労働力や起業家や多国籍企業が地域経済に果たす役割について、社会科学の他分野との接合を見据えながら、学際的な研究を行う。
