本研究は、アメリカ合衆国におけるアジア系集団の事例研究を通して、移民またはエスニッ ク・マイノリティ集団の居住および商業的空間であるエスニック・コミュニティの今日的な意義と機能を考察するものである。本研究では、まずは先行研究と理論研究の整理を行うことで論点を明確にしたうえで、フィールドワークを実施する計画である。初年度である2022年度は、先行研究と理論研究の整理を中心的に実施し、そのうえで2023年度以降に実施するフィールドワークの具体的な準備を行う予定であった。まず理論研究として、エスニシティに関する近年の議論の整理を行った。先行研究に関しては、特にロサンゼルスを中心としたアジア系集団のコミュニティ形成に関する先行研究を整理した。そのなかで特に都市社会学における先行研究を中心的に整理しながらも、歴史学や文化地理学など、社会学以外の関連研究にも目を配った。それと同時に、アジア系のみならず異なるコミュニティ間の境界線が鍵となるような事例についても先行研究として収集・整理した。特に、複数の集団が連携する事例について歴史学的なアプローチの研究や社会運動論の文脈で分析した研究などについても注目し、整理を行なった。これらに加えて、フィールドワークのための準備にも着手した。具体的にはロサンゼルスのリトルトーキョー地区について、現在活動しているコミュニティ組織ならびにコミュニティのなかで共有されている課題について情報を収集した。
