本研究は、1947年、新制中学校に誕生した職業科のうちの農業科（以下、職業科農業とする）に焦点を当て、戦後最初の文部省著作教科書『中学農業』（初版1947年5月～1948年1月発行）と『学習指導要領　職業科農業編（試案）昭和二十二年度』（1947年11月）の内容を中心に、職業科農業におけるプロジェクト活動の位置づけと形成過程、及びその特質と技術・職業教育的意味を明らかにすることを目的としている。令和4年度の最も中心的な課題は、『中学農業』の内容分析とした。この教科書の編纂主任であった島田喜知治（文部省教科書局）が述べた「郷土に立脚して展開されるプロジェクト学習」という同書の特徴の解明である。この結果、大きくは次の2点を解明した。第1に、『中学農業』は、日本国民の標準とすべき農業を、主に、（1）水田作と畑作などから成る作物栽培、（2）畜産等の飼育、（3）食品製造等の加工、の3種を適宜組み合わせた複合的・多角的農業としていたことである。第2に、『中学農業』は、こうした先進的な農業の複合化・多角化の実現・推進を前提として、中学生に対し、自らが生きる地域（「郷土」）の農作業上・農業経営上の基本的な諸問題に立ち向かわせ、それを合理的・科学的に解決させる力を育むことを目指していたと考えられたことである。そして、この教科書では、「夏の野菜（野菜の栽培その一）」「工芸作物（土地利用その二）」「どんなしくみの経営をしたらよいか」など、農作業・農業経営活動の一定のまとまりが最も基本的な単元となっていた。すなわち、これらの各単元は、経験単元ないしは作業単元であり、『中学農業』は、この教科書全体を通して、中学生一人ひとりに対し、自らの居住地域における農業の複合化・多角化の実現・推進という一大「プロジェクト」を課し、プロジェクト・メソッドに近い教育課程編成原理を採用していたと考えられた。
