COVID-19の感染拡大により，人々の暮らしは一変し，特に死亡リスクの高い高齢者については厳格な社会的隔離を余儀なくされ，孤立，それによる身体・精神へのネガティブな影響が懸念されてきた。 約３年という長期間の特異的な状況を続けてきたことで，現在においてもパンデミック以前に戻ったとは言い難く， 人間関係のあり方は変化したと思われる。このような中で，本研究では高齢者の人間関係と精神的健康の関連に注目し，発達心理学および臨床心理学を専門とする立場から，いかなる人間関係を持っている場合に高齢者の精神的健康が維持されるかについて検討し，明らかにすることを目的とした。本研究の特色は，ソーシャル・サポート・ネットワークの測定に際し，直接的な関わり（対面による関わり）と，遠隔的な関わり（電話，スマートフォン，インターネット・ツールなど）を区別し，半構造化面接法を用いて詳細にそのネットワークの構造と関わりの内容について尋ねて質的に分析を試みる点である。ソーシャル・サポート・ネットワークの誰とどのように関わっているのかについての内容を丁寧に見る発達心理学におけるソーシャル・ネットワーク理論の考えに基づき分析を行い，仮説を生成する。この仮説に基づいたアンケート調査を作成し，次の段階として量的な分析を行う。もう一つの特色は，特に高齢者は長い人生を歩んできており，その人の精神的健康の程度については，置かれた文脈や社会背景，パーソナリティ，家族構成や対人関係など様々な要因が関連すると思われる。そこで，①我が国において自宅で暮らす高齢者と，②海外において自宅で暮らす日本人の高齢者を対象とし，遠隔での関わりをこれまでも持ってきたであろう②と対比させることで，直接的関わりと遠隔的な関わりの両方について重点的に分析検討を行うものである。
