国立公文書館所蔵「太政官公文録」(明治元〜18年)等の明治初期の公文書には、官庁営繕関連文書が多数含まれている。本研究は、これら建築関連文書史料のうちの「建築仕様書」を中心資料とし、仕様書から読み取ることのできる建築の「構法技術」、「設計技術」のうち、特に建築設計寸法に関わる諸問題の検討を主題とした。明治初期は洋風建築とともに、メートル法、ヤード・ポンド法などの洋式尺度がわが国にもたらされた時代として重要である。わが国の初期洋風建築において、建築計画寸法や洋式構造における部材設計寸法が、邦人建築技術者にどう理解され、設計実務に反映されたか、また洋式尺度が伝統的な設計寸法にどのような影響を与えたかを、仕様書中の各種寸法記述を通して明らかにすることを本研究の目的とした。対象とした建築仕様書は「太政官公文録」中の建築仕様書で、既収集の89通に本年度新たに収集した47通を加えた136通である。各仕様書は解読後、設計寸法を抽出して分析を行なった。この結果、洋式尺度を記す仕様書は皆無であった。さらに洋式尺度が和式尺度へ換算されている可能性を想定して、単位の変換を行なったが、換算値と認められる寸法は見い出せなかった。明治初期の官庁営繕では、洋風建築であっても和式尺度で設計されたことが明らかとなった。一方、伝統構法の建物では、洋風構造を利用する例もあるが、設計寸法は和式尺度に基づいており、洋式尺度の影響は極めて小さい。このことは洋風建築導入のごく初期の段階において、既に設計寸法の十分な理解がなされ、「日本化」が完了していたことを示すと考えられる。ただし本研究で扱った木造建築の仕様書は、ほとんどが邦人建築技術者の設計によるものである。御雇外国人建築家による煉瓦造、石造等の本格的洋式建築を含めて、検討を進めることが今後の課題となろう。
