今回の研究の成果は、以下の三点である。(1)新しい枠組みでの記述生成音韻論的な方法論を利用することによって、従来の方言学には見られなかった、方言の詳細な記述を行った。具体的には、奄美方言の規則動詞の活用形を対象とし、それらを単なる表形式の記述としてではなく、語彙項目と規則群の記述という、より明示的な形で表した。(2)「方言差とは何か」に対する解答と方言規則地図の提唱(1)の結果、特に規則群の比較を行っていくと、あるいくつかの方言どうしが同じパターンを成すことが判明した。これは、一見別々の振る舞いをする方言がグループを成すということに繋がっている。そして、次には、これらのグル-ピングが地理的な分布と関連しているのではないかと予測できる。最終的には、単語の音声形の分布をプロットした「言語地図」と同じ方法論を採り、規則群の分布をプロットした「方言規則地図」を書くことができるという可能性を提唱した。(3)研究成果報告書の公表以上の研究成果を盛り込んだ研究成果報告書『奄美方言の規則動詞活用形における方言差の研究』『琉球諸方言の動詞活用形の研究』を作成した。
