『平家物語』(覚一本)を倫理思想史の立場から読み解く作業を通じて、物語制作に先行する実践の段階、物語制作の段階、物語制作に後続する実践の段階、のそれぞれについて、以下の点が明らかになった。1.物語制作に先行する実践(生活)の段階(1)『平家物語』制作の動機は、存在の無常性に抗し、言葉によってこれを超えようとする衝動にあった。過ぎ去った生、生きられた時間に対し、その反復を通じて意味づけをなそうとするところに、物語が存在する。(2)過ぎ去った生、生きられた時間の反復は、物語制作によってのみ遂行されるのではない。人々の日常の営みにおいて、自覚の有無にかかわらず、遂行されている。物語制作は、ことにその必要が際立った場合の自覚的遂行の一例であるといえる。2.物語制作の段階(1)物語は、過ぎ去った生、生きられた時間に対する意味づけを、様々な仕方で遂行する。たとえば、挿話的次元における情念の反復、叙事詩もしくは歴史的次元における出来事の全体性の反復、そして物語的次元における世界像の反復、など様々な反復を通じて意味づけが遂行される。(2)反復は、最終的に、対象の反復から自己の意識構造そのものの反復へと開けていく。3.物語制作に後続する実践(享受)の段階物語の享受者は、過ぎ去った平家の人々の生、平家の人々によって生きられた時間を反復し、制作者の意識を反復する。享受がもたらすカタルシスは、他者反復を媒介として自己自身の反復を遂行し得た喜びである。
