イングランド女王エリザベル1世の巡幸中に行なわれたパジャント、仮面劇等の演劇的エンターテインメントの上演目的、主題の分析を当時の政治的状況と関連づけて行なった。その結果、(1)ジョージ・ギャスコイン、サ-・フィリップ・シドニーらが執筆した1570年代のレスター伯ロバート・ダドリー主催のエンターテインメントでは、寵臣の女王にたいする求婚が主題となっており、そうした主題がしばしば女王の不興を買ったこと、(2)女王の結婚をめぐる国内の論争がピークを迎えた1570年代末から1580年代初頭にかけての出来事が、より精確に言えば1581-2年のアレンソン・マッチの頓挫と言語統制令がエンターテインメントにおけるエリザベス表象の転換点となったこと、(3)1580年代前半のブランクを経て、1580年代からエリザベス統治の最晩年にかけて、ジョン・リリ-らの手によって女王を貞潔の女神ディアーナになぞらえるエリザベス崇拝の基本的パターンが確立されていくこと、以上3点にわたる知見を得ることができた。こうした分析結果は、この分野の先行研究であるYates(1975),Strong(1976)が提出した一枚岩的なエリザベス崇拝観にたいして、時間的経緯のレヴェルにおいても、形成に参与した主体のレヴェルにおいても修正を加えるものであり、また、Strong(1987)がエリザベスの肖像画に関する研究で提出した上記学説の見直しが正しかったことをエンターテインメントの面から示すものとなる。
