本研究は、日本語母語話者における日英語の心的辞書の機序の解明をめざす。実験変数は、英語の語特性にかかわるもので、英語からの借用語か否か、高頻度か中頻度語か、であった。これらの条件下で、英単語を用いた語彙判定課題および音読課題を大学生に対して実施した。その結果、語彙判定実験では、借用語の主効果および頻度の主効果は有意であったが、交互作用は有意ではなかった。借用語の優位性は、心的辞書の日英語共通性を示唆する。英語の活字頻度は、借用語と統制語とによって統制されているので、音韻的類似度および発話語の習得時期の効果が示唆される。音読実験では、借用語の主効果および交互作用は有意でなく、頻度のみ有意であった。したがって、音韻的類似性は、直接的に音読潜時に影響を与えていない。しかも、英語母語話者の場合と逆転して、音読潜時が語彙判定潜時よりも遅いという結果を示した。しかし、日本語における、漢字表記語で、上記実験とパラレルな実験を実施し、同様に音読潜時が語彙判定潜時よりも有意に遅いことを確認した。これらを総合すると、1)英語語彙判定課題では、表記語から直接に語彙項目にアクセスする可能性、2)音読課題では、英語的発音と日本語的発音が競合して、音読行為が干渉された可能性、3)英語学習において語の音声化の訓練が不十分である可能性、4)漢字の音声処理法が英単語の音声処理法に転移している可能性が考えられる。現在、これらのどの可能性が主要因であるかの検討を行っている。
