古墳時代の墳墓は南九州でも多数存在するが、人骨と副葬品の両方が保存良好な墳墓は極めて少ない。宮崎県えびの市島内地下式横穴墓群は、その数少ない遺跡のひとつである。島内では、70数基から150体を超える人骨および、畿内との関連をうかがわせる甲冑、蛇行剣など多数の鉄製副葬品が出土している。島内の台地には、少なく見積もっても、まだ、400基の地下式横穴墓が存在するという。しかし、全て玄室陥没による緊急発掘のため、人骨の追葬状況、埋葬順位、玄室の正確な形態など、大切な考古学的・人類学的情報が得られていなかった。我々は平成10年度に島内を2回発掘し、新たに12基の地下式横穴墓を発見した。その内の7基から10体の古墳時代人骨と、甲冑、大刀、鉄剣、鉄鏃および糞石、植物の種子を得た。陥没していない墓を竪抗から調査できたため、いずれも保存状態は良く、追葬状況、埋葬順位、玄室の正確な形態など、埋葬に関する様々な情報が得られた。特に糞石、植物の種子は、食生活、葬送儀礼を解明する上での貴重な資料となる。また、玄室内の観察から、初葬者に赤色顔料を塗るか振りかけ、多量の鉄製品を副葬している。初葬者は、男女の区別なく、子供の例も認められた。これらは、島内の埋葬原理を解明する上で貴重な情報である。南九州古墳時代人の位置づけを行う上でも島内地下式横穴墓群の発掘調査を行うことは大変意義深い。貴重な人類学・考古学的情報と人骨資料を更に増加させるために、再度、島内地下式横穴墓群の発掘調査を行い、以前出土した150体と合わせて島内人の形質・文化・生活様式を解明したい。

Valuable anthropological and archaeological information and human bone data have increased in recent years, and the investigation of underground tombs in the island has been carried out again. The 150 bodies previously unearthed have been combined to explain the nature, culture and life style of the island.
