本研究の目的は、第二言語学習者の統語処理について統語予測の観点から分析し、英語母語話者との差異を明らかにすることである。Brothers, Hoversten and Traxler(2021)を基に自動詞他動詞を実験対象にして、実験項目を作成し、視線計測実験のためのプログラムを作った。先行研究で使用された統語的ガーデンパス実験文は、語彙レベルも高く日本人英語学習者にとって未知語を多く含むと想定されたので、実験文を日本人英語学習者に適切なレベルに修正した。また、自動詞他動詞の知識の有無を確認するため文法性判断課題と自他動詞の知識確認テストも作成した。自他動詞知識確認テストは、動詞（（例　visit）が１）自動詞でしか使われない、２）（自動詞他動詞の）両方で使用されるが自動詞でよく使用される、３）（自動詞他動詞の）両方で使用されるが他動詞でよく使用される、４）他動詞でしか使われない、５）わからないの５択でテストした。予備実験の結果から、第二言語学習者の特定の自他動詞の理解は、実際の自他動詞のふるまいとは相違がある可能性が示唆された。この結果は、例え高頻度の動詞であっても、自他動詞の知識は欠落していることが指摘された。本研究では、自他動詞の明示的な知識の有無によって、どのように統語処理が変化するかを観察する。文法性判断課題は、自他動詞を含む実験文を提示し、動詞のふるまいが文法的に正しいか否かを判断するタスクを作成した。さらに、digit spanテストとアンチサッケードテストも作成し、実験参加者のワーキングメモリーや視覚抑制機能の要因も検証する。
