本研究の目的は、空海の密教思想や王権思想、神仏習合思想が日本彫刻史に与えた影響を明らかにすることにある。第二年度である本年度は、第一年度の研究成果を公表するとともに、観心寺如意輪観音像と東寺講堂諸像を研究対象として、空海の密教思想および王権思想との関連を考究した。第一年度の研究成果の公表に関しては、「東寺八幡三神像の制作背景に関する考察」と題する論文を『美術史』177（2014年10月）に掲載した。さらに、この内容を発展させ、アジアにおける仏教と神信仰研究会（2014年10月）において「九世紀の密教と神像彫刻――八幡神を中心として――」と題する口頭発表を行い、日本史学の研究者との間で議論を深めた。これらに加え、伊東史朗責任編集『日本美術全集　第四巻　密教寺院から平等院へ（平安時代Ⅰ）』（小学館、2014年12月）に、神像彫刻についての作品解説6件を執筆し、研究成果を公表した。観心寺如意輪観音像に関しては、美術史学会西支部九月例会で「観心寺如意輪観音像の思想的背景と制作年代」と題する口頭発表を行い、次の点を明らかにした。すなわち、観心寺如意輪観音像が即身成仏を果たすための五相成身観の本尊であり、四種護摩修法の敬愛法本尊であることを論証し、橘嘉智子の「御願」が和合親睦であったとの見解を提示した。本研究成果については、『仏教芸術』に論文を投稿する計画である。東寺講堂諸像に関しては、その他の九世紀の密教彫刻の制作背景の問題を含め、現在、即身成仏思想と鎮護国家思想という密教の二大中心思想との関連について研究成果をまとめている。なお、本研究課題の遂行を通じて、密教請来以前の『陀羅尼集経』に基づくとされる東寺講堂四天王像についても密教的解釈の展望が得られたため、今後は東寺講堂諸像の二十一尊全体の思想的背景の問題へと研究を進展させたい。
