In 2020 the UK Government took a historic step and decided to end sales of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030\. Our charging infrastructure should grow to meet the challenge of supporting massive adoption of electric vehicles. It is estimated that the infrastructure needs to expand 50+ chargers per day to meet future demand. As a result of this roll-out pressure, local authorities and charging network operators sometimes prioritise installing as many charge points as possible over investigating whether charging points are located properly within our cities. However, choosing right locations for charge points is very important because improperly placed chargers could affect adoption and usage of electric vehicles and undermine broader decarbonisation goals. Our project supports our local authorities and charging network operators in this grand challenge. Our cloud-based business-to-business software solution determines suggested charge point areas in urban areas based on design and procurement requirements. Our key innovation is the development of statistical pattern recognition and automated decision-making algorithms to optimise the deployment of public charging infrastructure. Such advanced digital solutions currently do not exist in the public charging infrastructure space. This project will integrate advanced engineering techniques into an easy-to-use open solution, so that not only technical experts but also people with limited technical expertise in coding could use such an innovative software. Our business community, powered by our innovative solution, could in return build new product and services that can further accelerate the development of necessary electric vehicle public charging infrastructure. Our software will help local authorities and charging network providers in two ways: (1) their team members would be able to carry out infrastructure planning activities on their own capacity without relying to other external resources, saving time and money, and accelerating charging station roll-out efforts, and (2) planners will be able to develop comprehensive strategies to improve access and usage of future deployed stations at a much faster pace, increasing the capability of the charging network to serve as many electric vehicles as possible.
