项目摘要
PROJECT SUMMARY / ABSTRACT
This supplement to NIMH grant R01 MH123157 (Latin American Biobank of Severe Mental Illness [LAB-SMI])
will enable the UCLA investigators of this project to establish a DNA repository for this project. The parent project
aims to reverse the underrepresentation of populations from Latin America in psychiatric genetic research. It will
do so by recruiting and phenotyping 92,000 new participants from Colombia (42,000 individuals diagnosed with
SMI and 50,000 population controls) and obtaining blood samples from these participants that will provide the
DNA for genome wide genetic studies. The supplement will fund the investigators to augment the processes
proposed in the parent grant for DNA extraction and storage so as to: (1) obtain larger amounts of high-quality
DNA; (2) store and track the DNA samples in a way that will facilitate the use of the samples beyond the specific
aims of the parent grant; (3) make aliquots of DNA available to qualified investigators based on protocols
established with NIMH program staff. The supplement will add to the value of the parent project as a unique
resource for the first well-powered genetic studies of psychiatric disorders in populations of Latin American
ancestry and for exploring the genetic architecture of SMI phenotypes.
