"The aim of the ABLE DOC project is to improve the self-management of health among people with diabetes in Colombia. This is important because the number of adults with diabetes in Colombia was estimated at nearly 3 million in 2017 by the International Diabetes Federation, with associated health costs of over 2 billion USD.The project goal will be achieved by conducting a feasibility study to evaluate the potential of an avatar-based educational programme to improve awareness and understanding of the condition, the effects of treatment, and strategies for effective management. The activities through which this study will be achieved include:1) A human-centred design study, conducted among Colombian clinicians and people with diabetes, in order to fully understand the local problems and current educational practices.2) Interdisciplinary research to understand which blood glucose patterns could be most appropriate to respond to explore whether an AI system could potentially recommend training material by analysing those patterns.3) Development and delivery of a pilot avatar-based programme for diabetic patients in Colombia focusing on one identified intervention from the design study.Each of these activities will be supported by an experienced project management team. The work will culminate in the production of a final business plan for implementation. The plan will include the user feedback from the pilot programme, market potential, validation of end-user needs, route to commercialisation and proposed stakeholder engagement plan.The project has potential for multiple impacts in Colombia. Research indicates that the long-term complications associated with diabetes are preventable by optimising glycaemic control, and this project will make a huge difference to such health outcomes by offering timely and trusted clinical information so that individuals can achieve good control safely. This aligns with the targets of UN Sustainable Development Goal 3, which focuses on good health and well-being."
