The aim is to create a process to convert a 3D body scan of a woman into a bespoke 2Dpattern without manual intervention.We currently use body scan data for our menswear, following traditional made to measurepattern techniques to go from scan to suit without any fittings. This approach has not beensuccessful for women due to the complexity of the female body shape.We propose to innovate a process using the 3D scan avatar unwrapping this into a bespoke 2Dpattern. Tailored For You (TFY) has the expertise in pattern creation but not the programmingskills required to manipulate the 3D data into a flat 2D pattern. Blom UK has been chosenbecause of their track record in manipulating 3D data. Our approach utilises existinggeomatics industry techniques for working with 3D environments/objects and representingthem as 2D maps and applying this through development to the 3D scan to create the 2Dpattern. The project will test the process with key garment types. The resulting patterns willbe manufactured as toile samples to check the fit on the actual person whose 3D scan wasused – providing evidence of success.This project will create a step change in the clothing industry bringing mass customisation toreality and greatly reducing the level of returns due to ‘poor fit’ that currently account for60% of returns at a cost of $28bn. Resolving this will not only reduce retailers’ costs butincrease sales as customers will be able to buy good fitting clothes. Stores will be able topromote their clothes to a wider audience, eliminating the need for specialist ranges and thesocial exclusion that labels like ‘plus size’ and ‘petite’ create.The process will be licensed per unit. A retailer like M&S would sell 0.5m units per yearlicensed at £2 per unit would generate revenues of £1m. Multiplied across a range of retailersrevenues could easily exceed £6m. Our existing USA menswear partner is keen to team upwith us; the USA women’s market is worth $41bn.Resubmission
