英文摘要
The Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (INI) is an international centre for mathematics of the highest quality and impact, specialising in long-term thematic residential programmes that bring together researchers from across the full breadth of the mathematical sciences as well as other collaborative disciplines. It serves as a portal for UK mathematics and its programmes and accompanying workshops allow UK researchers to present on an international platform while at the same time attracting prominent international scientists to the UK for an exchange of methodology, knowledge and ideas. Based in Cambridge and benefitting from a bespoke and iconic building as well as the world-leading facilities in Cambridge, INI is nevertheless an independent forum serving the whole UK mathematical sciences community. Founded in 1992 the Institute has run over 150 distinct programmes (lasting one, four or six months) with the number of programme and workshop participants reaching 3000 per annum. Programme topics range from the most fundamental and abstract to a myriad of applications tackling problems in other fields from biology to medicine, computer to data science, cryptography to physics, and so on, as well as addressing global societal challenges. INI regularly hosts Fields Medallists and Abel Prize winners as well as many Nobel Prize winners and other international leading scientists. INI programmes catalyse global dissemination and hence international recognition of UK mathematics and the people behind it. They also lift and boost activity in the UK by giving especially early career researchers personal access to world experts. The Newton Gateway to Mathematics is the renowned knowledge exchange arm of INI. It brings the mathematical sciences community together with an impressive range of partners in business, industry, commerce and government, for example via its Open for Business events. The Gateway partners with a range of organisations to assist the whole of the mathematical sciences community. Most recently it was invited by Innovate UK to become a trusted broker on its Analysis for Innovators programme connecting SMEs with academic teams in the mathematical sciences. INI reaches out to the UK community through its satellite workshops and satellite programmes. Talks and seminars are routinely live-streamed and recorded, and INI Talks Elsewhere scheme encourages programme participants to visit other UK institutions. The Institute regularly hosts public engagement events, including Rothschild and Kirk public lectures, and one-off events such as the recent oversubscribed workshop Communicating Mathematics for the Public. The INI communication team ensures events and programmes are well-publicised and produces content via its in-house podcast series Living Proof and a fruitful collaboration with Plus Magazine. INI has been agile in responding to the needs of the mathematical community, for example through its Solidarity programme for refugee research mathematicians and its Network Support scheme, and it has been instrumental in the setting up of the Knowledge Exchange Hub and the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences. With the launch of its new EDI action plan, INI will address the gender gap and widen access more generally. Having already received triple NUS Green Impact Awards, our vision is to tackle the challenges of sustainability also in its programming. Through thought leadership and example, INI will champion safe and responsible research and foster the next generation of mathematical scientists. More generally, INI is committed to maintain a culture of creativity and excellence, for which it is widely recognised, and will continue to deliver ground-breaking research of the highest international standard.
