Common mental health problems such as mood, anxiety and stress-related disorders are impact more than half of us during our lifetimes, and initially occur typically during childhood or adolescence. They are a leading worldwide cause of disability, health-service use, economic cost, and suffering. Even the best of our current treatments for these disorders leave around half of patients with ongoing disabling levels of distress, and problems commonly return later. Improving the treatment and prevention of these conditions is therefore a priority. This programme uses what we call ‘basic science’ to further understand the nature of these disorders using different methods from brain imaging through to psychological experiments. We then use these basic findings to develop and improve our psychological treatments for these disorders, for children adolescents and adults. These treatments are then evaluated within what we call randomised controlled trials, where the new/improved treatment is compared against an existing treatment which we already know works, to see if the new treatment is as good or better.
