Our aim is to establish a national Data Stewardship training programme, exploiting a wealth of resources and expertise within ELIXIR, an intergovernmental organisation that unites Europe's leading life science organisations in managing and safe-guarding the increasing volume of data being generated by publicly funded research. We will lift these resources and expertise in research data management into the UK, tailoring them to needs of the UK researchers with the help of a pool of experts and practitioners, and delivering them to UK universities and institutions through a Life Science Data Stewardship Fellowship programme. The proposed Data Stewardship training programme will be developed and run ELIXIR-UK, the UK national node of 18 organisations. Its members actively lead much of the ELIXIR work in training and services for research data management that are essential to ensure that data is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR).Despite the promotion of data stewardship by stakeholders at a national level, only a fraction of data generated by UK life science researchers is openly shared and far less is FAIR. Although FAIR data management is endorsed by funding agencies and data infrastructure specialists worldwide, as well as global open scholarship advocates and organisations, it is less well known among researchers who generate and (re)use data. Undoubtedly there is a great deal of bioinformatics training but not much of this is on research data management. When such training exists generally it is either run by organisations and data providers, who offer good training but tailored to their own resources, or it is too generic to be usefully practical, because it does not address the realities and varieties of data. The specific objectives of our Data Stewardship training programme are:1. To develop and deliver modularised virtual training tailored for Life Science data stewardship grounded in real practice.2. To establish a fellowship of Life Science Data Stewards that will seed a training network to migrate research data management best practice and training into UK universities and research institutions.3. To adapt and contribute to openly available training materials, best practice and research data management methods in relevant ELIXIR resources.4. To maintain training materials, know-how and a self-sustained fellowship network. Our Data Stewardship training programme will be broadly applicable across communities and specialist topics by data type (e.g. sensitive human data, proteomics, image management), community (e.g. marine metagenomics, plant sciences, structural biology). We aim to target a diverse and inclusive audience, covering those looking to manage and share life science data: specifically (i) biomedical researchers and healthcare specialists at all career stages, and (ii) their research support staff, such as data stewards, technicians, facility operators, research software engineers. The latter will build continuity, establish a sustainable foothold in UK institutions and provides a route to professionalisation of data stewardship.
