This research uses archaeological and historical material to examine the social and economic impacts of the construction of the Chelsea Embankment on the working-class riverside residents of Chelsea. In doing so, it will examine the significance of watery places with regards to notions of community, cultural landscapes and sense of place for waterside residents. In order to explore these themes, the research questions ask:1. What was the character of the Thames riverside landscape at Chelsea in the pre- and post-Embankment period?2. What was the nature of social and economic relationships pre- and post-Embankment and is there evidence of a working-class 'community' in Chelsea prior to or after the Embankment construction? 3. What were the physical impacts of the construction of the Chelsea Embankment on the working-class residents?4. What were the wider social and economic effects of the Chelsea Embankment construction on the working-class residents?
