Magnetic resonance studies of spin phenomena in semiconductor quantum dots

This experimental project focuses on electron and nuclear spin physics in nanometer-sized optically active semiconductor quantum dots. Semiconductor quantum dots are a promising hardware for the emerging quantum information technologies: the spin wavefunction of the electron can be used to store and process quantum information. The interaction of the electron spin with the spins of atomic nuclei is a major challenge on this way. The aim of this project is to explore the physics and develop the working principles for a state-of-the-art quantum logic gate where electron spin is isolated from nuclear spin fluctuations using radio-frequency magnetic resonance pulses. Techniques for microwave coherent manipulation of the electron spin wavefunction will be developed in order to pave the way for electric coherent control in scalable optoelectronic circuits for quantum information processing. This project will be a part of a very successful research work conducted by the Inorganic Semiconductor Physics group at the University of Sheffield.
