Semiclassical analysis and Open Quantum Systems

Open quantum systems are quantum systems which are in contact with an environment, and where the influence of the environment is typically described using a master equation like the Lindblad equation. Semiclassical analysis has been a very successful tool in studying many applications of quantum mechanics, but it has not yet been widely used in the study of open quantum systems, and the Phd project of Daniel Speed will focus on that area. In particular he will investigate the relations between semiclassical hypoellipticity, Hormander vector fields and decoherence, with the goal of developing the foundations for a general quantitative and qualitative theory of decoherence for continuous variable quantum systems.
