This project investigates the privacy and security practices of a selection of reproductive tracking apps. These apps offer their users functionalities in tracking their menstrual cycle, predict their fertility or track the progress of a pregnancy. They are swiftly growing in popularity and collect a sensitive combination of user information. Despite this, menstruapps are consistently neglected by cyber security practitioners. By carrying out a detailed technical analysis of a selection of these apps, the project will assess the quality and appropriateness of the security and privacy measures put in place in these apps. The project also investigates the implications of poor practice in app design on those using the apps. It brings together the technical analysis together with social science research methods to consider the impact these apps have on the world and the societal context in which they are developed. This includes issues such as reproductive rights and identity politics. These approaches together can be used to inform the design and engineering of these apps and other health apps.
