The Project will first entail being trained in mid-infrared optical fibre making in the CleanRoom suite at Nottingham housing a dedicated fibredrawing tower. This will involve first glass-making and then extruding and drawing to low optical loss mid-infrared fibre. In particular the fibre will be formulated to be luminescent in order to be used for sensing. The end-goal is to try to make the fibre lase. This work will complement the current EPSRC COOL funding (2017-2020). Fibre lasers will be used for new fibre laser surgery wavelengths. In addition they will pump the supercontinuum lasers for imaging of cells and tissues. My background from studying for the MSc in Bioengineering will help my understanding and pursuance of the medical and healthcare aspects of this research.
