Panhellenism and local tradition in early Greek hexameter poetry

The proposed project aims to investigate the notion of local tradition in early Greek hexameter poetry (EGHP). The scope of the investigation shall cover the Iliad, Odyssey, Homeric Hymns, Theogonia, Erga Kai Hemerai, Katalogos Gynaikon, other fragments attributed to Homer or Hesiod, the remains of the Epic and Theban cycles, and any other surviving hexameter that can be dated to the sixth century BCE and before. The primary questions I wish to address are: 'Is it possible to identify elements of local tradition in EGHP?' and 'Does the use of local tradition support the theory that some or all of EGHP is explicitly designed to have Panhellenic appeal?'.The question of the origin of EGHP is, has been and will likely remain both crucial to an understanding of this substantial body of Greek poetry and deeply controversial, due to the absence of reliable or contemporary accounts of its creation. The problem of local origins is closely intertwined with questions of origin and ideology, and is also important in its own right as an aspect of the poems which would have been prominent in the minds of early audiences. Investigations so far in this area have focused on ascribing elements (characters, storylines, particular linguistic features) to certain localities, particularly in the works of Nagy and Levaniouk, but there is ample room for a more critical analysis of the methodological underpinnings of such approaches. In particular, it is important to distinguish local associations within the texts from associations outside the text, and from the point of creation. By developing an approach which is methodologically rigorous, I hope to reach insights which can improve our understanding of the poems and their original function within the contemporary Greek world.My research method is to use a variety of approaches which all have a bearing on questions of local tradition in the poems: some have been more studied than others, but it is only through a holistic approach that one can hope to reach plausible conclusions. The most obvious avenue of investigation is a literary one, focusing on particular characters and stories which might originate in local traditions and the effect this would have for a contemporary audience of the poems. Another key area to investigate is the language of EGHP: there is still controversy on how exactly this relates to the local dialects of the Greek world. Archaeological data can play a dual role: recent work on connectivity in the EIA Aegean can provide a useful background to considering the context of local tradition, and a study of iconography (particularly in pottery decorated with mythological scenes) and its variation across the contemporary Greek world will be interesting to compare with the literary evidence. I shall then collate the results of these different areas to reach conclusions on the question of epichoric and Panhellenic elements in the poems, and the wider consequences for our understanding of EGHP.
