'Higher Forms of Interdependence': Saul Bellow and Friendship

Ultimately, my thesis will examine how Saul Bellow's fiction articulates and aesthetics and a politics of friendship. It willalso situate Bellow within the history of writing in friendship (Aristotle, Montaigne, Emerson, Derrida, etc.) and withinmore recent work in other fields, such as philosophy, politics, and psychology. With Bellow as a firm centre for the PhD,and also perhaps as an example for later work, I also intend to suggest ways in which a consideration of friendship, bothas a category of human relationships and as a term of much figurative resonance, can be an effective and illuminatingapproaching for studying other writers.
