Towards Gender Inclusive Healthcare: Improving Transgender healthcare education amongst medical students

The research aims to understand medical student and transgenderuser perspectives on gender non-conforming healthcare userexperiences, and to explore models for successful trainingopportunities for medical students. Working within a constructivistperspective, this research will conduct focus group interviews withmembers of the Newcastle Transgender community, in order tounderstand their experiences of interacting with healthcareproviders. This data will then be turned into case study materialsthat will be incorporated into a training workshop for medicalstudents, enabling them to role-play doctor-patient interactionswith Transgender patients. The focus group interviews and datacollected during the workshops (participant observation data,survey data and elite interview data), will be analysed to develop adeeper understanding of medical student and transgender userperspectives on gender non-conforming healthcare experiencesand to reflect upon the utility of the workshops as a means ofenacting cultural change in professional practice, with a particularfocus on enhancing contemporary medical pedagogy to becomemore trans-inclusionary.
