The PhD project presents an interdisciplinary critical study of civic epistemologies of climate "Loss and Damage" (L&D)in transnational settings. Revolving around the epistemic and political effectiveness of L&D facts, the overarching aim isto contribute to a deeper understanding about what the conceptual development and institutionalisation of L&D meansfor global and local understandings of climate change (Hulme 2008), while accounting for progress made in weatherattribution science. The central research question asks "how knowledge claims and facts about climate L&D areestablished, validated and mobilised across both epistemic and political jurisdictions in different transnational settings".This will be investigated through triangulated multi-sited ethnography (expert interviews, observations, documentanalysis) in selected sites where L&D knowledge claims are made and/or utilised (IPCC, UNFCCC, Asia-Pacific Forumon Loss and Damage, Loss and Damage in Vulnerable Countries Initiative, Loss and Damage Network). The centralobjective is to combine an analysis of past efforts of knowledge production and mobilisation across political andepistemic communities with an exploration of future trajectories for L&D facts travelling, inter alia with recourse to newclimate modelling techniques. Tracing back the evolution of L&D will trigger new questions for an interdisciplinaryresearch agenda in Human Geography, Science and Technology Studies (STS) and Climate Science.
