Rereading Henry Green: a genealogy of influence and self-influence

I want to propose a new way of reading the critically neglected novelist Henry Green; one attentive primarily not to content but to voice. I will trace his writing's imitations and reiterations by mapping its relationship to three mutually informative spheres of influence: earlier literature, his contemporaries' writing and his own, which he increasingly revisits for ideas and imagery. This lineage will expose his slim output's debt to well-known grand realist works of the nineteenth century as well as other chronically neglected writing - such as eighteenth-century literature, especially in French. Ultimately, the thesis will highlight Green's affinity to similarly under-researched contemporary writers, such as Anthony Powell, Ivy Compton-Burnett and Ronald Firbank, who worked in unique and idiosyncratic modes out of the mainstream of Modernism.
