My critical research will examine 'lyric narcissism', my own term, to be defined using works by Freud, Kristeva,Lacan, Chasseguet-Smirgel, and Rosenfeld, alongside texts by Pleshette DeArmitt, Julie Walsh, ChristopherLasch, Louise Gluck and Julie L. Hall. I will build on the avant-garde idea of Levinasian 'ethical lyric subjectivity'and argue that the poetry and prose of Sam Riviere, Frederick Seidel and Maureen N. McLane subvert lyricnarcissism, and remain ethical, using paradoxically 'narcissistic' techniques . Alongside this research, I will writea series of provocations on narcissism in various contexts using a hybrid essayistic form deploying aphorism andverse.
