This project employs interdisciplinary approaches to investigate relationships between gender andlandscape in early medieval England. Previous studies have explored how early medieval Englishlandscapes related to social identities like status or ethnicity but have neglected gender. However, genderis central to social organisation: landscapes, constructed by societies, thus reflect and are created byassumptions related to gender. This project therefore employs interdisciplinary approaches to textual andmaterial evidence and investigates both via spatial analyses in order to change the way that scholarsunderstand both landscape and gender, and the significant social changes connected with them, in earlymedieval England.
