EXCEED THE SPACE PROVIDED. Support is requested to train 10 predoctoral students in the field of Biological Chemistry. NIH trainees will be selected after completion of their first year of graduate school from students in the interdepartmental Program in Biological Chemistry (PBC) and from students who entered through individual departmental programs and selected research advisors from faculty in the PBC. The PBC is now in its tenth year, with funds for recruiting and fellowships for 10-13 students provided by the University. The PBC has 34 faculty from departments in the Colleges of Medicine (Biochemistry, Oncological Sciences, Experimental Oncology), Pharmacy (Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry), and Science (Biology, Chemistry). The training grant will provide support for students during their crucial second year as they make the transition from course work and preliminary exams to full-time research. Additional training in chemistry or biology will be provided as needed to complement the first year's curriculum of the students entering from the PBC or departmental programs. Current and former NIH trainees will interact with the groups in other PBC labs through a seminar program jointly sponsored by PBC and the training grant, monthly biochemical interest group seminars featuring research from groups on campus, monthly research-in-progress brown bag meetings for trainees, an annual retreat for past and current trainees, and the annual Biosciences Retreat. Research areas available to the trainees include structure and function of proteins and nucleic acids, organic synthesis of biologically important molecules, biosynthesis, natural products chemistry, bioanalytical chemistry, computational chemistry, and drug delivery. The grant will be administered by an Executive Committee that also monitors the progress of the students until they receive their PhD degrees.
