Janik's project will focus on the non-equilibrium statistical physics of interacting particles where diffusive dynamics is combined with particle creation/annihilation. This broad class of models exhibit a rich phenomenology, and describe a range of physical systems that include populations of interacting organisms (where creation/annihilation would correspond to birth/death), and competition between turbulent and laminar fluid flow (via the connection to the directed percolation universality class). We will focus initially on systems with emergent cyclic dynamics (for example, periodic sequences of population growth and collapse), and combine theoretical and numerical work to improve our fundamental understanding of aspects of their behaviour such as fluctuations, entropy production, and rare event dynamics.
