Youth Unemployment in India

India has one of the largest youth populations and faces a high long-run (youth) unemployment rate (currently around 17.8% according to Annual Report, Periodic Labour Force Survey of India, 2017-18). To thoroughly study the issue, I want to divide my thesis into three possible chapters. Firstly, I want to understand the impact of skills mismatches on youth unemployment in India given the pace of job creation in the economy. The second chapter will analyze a youth Skill Development policy named 'Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY)' scheme of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in India. And the third chapter will explore the relationship between crime and youth unemployment. Using data from Indian National Sample Survey, Indian Human Development Survey and Annual Industrial Survey and labor statistics, and National Crime Record Bureau, which contains data on employment, unemployment rates, crime rates, education, and so on, I aim to apply econometric models to study the relationship between the concerned variables. The methodology will be developed on previous research that has used duration models to study the exit rate from unemployment due to improvement in skills and the Becker model tostudy the correlation between crime and unemployment. Thus, the research with its social objectives concerning the important human capital resource of a vast economy will aim to holistically analyze the issues by making detailed inquiries into the previously published research and open new avenues for further development.
