Gas sensors are used in a wide variety of settings to ensure personal safety, including medical environments, chemical manufacturing plants, and in mining. These sensors and in particular those for toxic gases require regular testing to ensure their safe operation. In this project the student will be part of a team that are re-designing electrochemical gas sensors to remove the need for so-called bump testing wherein the sensor is exposed to the target gas to confirm safe operation. Removing this need will increase the operational time for the sensors and improve safety. In the project you will learn both advanced electrochemical methods and computational modelling of the electrochemical and mass transport responses of gas sensors. Particular emphasis will be placed on gas sensors used in medical devices. The project offers the opportunity to see the research incorporated into a commercially viable device through collaboration with City Technology, a division of Honeywell.
