Comprising both a history and film/practice component, my multi-disciplinary AV-PhD research project is not just a story about decolonisation or an instant in decolonisation. Rather, it pivots on the unique instance of Malawi's independence struggle against the controversial Central African Federation (CAF, 1953-1963). A short-lived political and constitutional creation by the British against the wishes of the African majority combining the two Rhodesias and Nyasaland, it collapsed due to mounting and forceful African opposition. Focusing on the forgotten history of the extraordinary mobilization of the radical international media behind the struggle and the 'war of words' it sparked with the pro-CAF press, it also examines the role of British colonial films as dimensions of politicking and propaganda against the struggle.
