Socio-spatial dynamics of queerness and mobility in Bogotá, Colombia

This interdisciplinary project focuses on human mobility, queerness, andrelated urban struggles. It centres on ethnically diverse social groupsencompassing Colombian nationals (including internally displaced people)and international migrants from Venezuela, the Global North, andelsewhere. It will use innovative comparative research in Bogotá(Colombia) to advance conceptual and policy debates on the geography ofsexuality and ideas of urban justice.The proposed project sits firmly within the "Cities, Environment andLiveability" pathway by addressing and exploring grand challenges througha dynamic understanding of the contemporary city. It adopts a genuinelyglobal perspective in acknowledging the interconnectedness of cities andthe challenges they confront. Specifically, it speaks to the CEL pathway inrelation to: social exclusion - promoting the right to the city of social groupsmarginalised by their sexuality and gender identity; poverty - understandingthe socio-economic drivers of mobility and displacement among diversequeer groups; and climate change and environmental degradation -incorporating issues such as droughts and flooding as global push factorsfor internal and international mobility, particularly rural to urban migration.The project focuses on these issues through a multi-scalar approach,tracing how local, national and international queer mobility patterns shaperural-urban interactions and foster urban belonging and community. Theseare themes directly connected to the liveability component of this pathway.
