This project is the first to systematically apply modern critical theories of the body, gender, gothic and grotesque, and pastoral, to the poetry of Dylan Thomas. It shows how and why the early poetry uses forms of cultural 'in-betweenness' in a hybrid rewriting of established poetic styles of the 1930s. Drawing on DTs notebook poems, archive material and contemporary journalism, memoir and visual art; it charts its later development under wartime conditions, and its final evolution into a form of cold war pastoral.
