This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The goal of this research is to demonstrate the utility of magnetic resonance microscopy in characterizing the neuropathology findings in F344 rats following exposure to the clean air chemical, carbonyl sulfide (COS). Carbonyl sulfide was nominated to the National Toxicology Program for toxicity testing by the Environmental Protection Agency. Furthermore COS was included on the clean air act chemical list because of reported high emissions (9500 tons/yr) and lack of animal studies. This study will provide the necessary toxicity and mechanistic data for the protection of human health. COS has been chosen as representative of the types of studies that would be beneficial to NIEHS in assessing neuropathology in both fixed tissues (MR Histology) and live animal (longitudinal) studies.
