This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This study investigates how 7-year-old children and parents response to stressful situations. Specifically, we want to learn about how parents and children interact during a medical procedure and in problem-solving situations. Also, this study will examine how bodily responses to stress are related to ways that children cope with stressful situations. In particular, we want to learn about cortisol, which is a substance produced by the body during stress. We would like to learn about responses to stress and emotions in children that have allergies, asthma, and/or eczema compared to children without allergies, asthma, and/or eczema. The study includes children and families previously enrolled in the Childhood Asthma Prevention Study (CAPS), who are returning to the laboratory for a follow-up evaluation at 7 years of age. There is abundant information about their early childhood psychosocial environment and illness events. Examining how these early experiences predict and/or contribute to children's development and their behavior in interactions later in childhood will be a valuable research contribution.
