This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The purpose of the screening portion of the study is to determine if gum disease is present in addition to heart disease. The purpose of the treatment phase is to see if treatment of gum disease will have beneficial effects on preventing heart disease from causing a heart attack, needing a coronary artery bypass surgery or balloon angioplasty/intervention, or worsening of chest pain.
