英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Purpose: The overall purpose of this research is to identify biological markers for gum disease (gingivitis), which can be identified within the gum fluid (gingival crevicular fluid) or the saliva, that may be used to identify who is at greatest risk for developing gum disease and who responds best to treatments. Participants: Twenty-four to thirty participants, to ensure completion of twenty-four, will be recruited by advertisement. Participants will be between the ages of 18 & 65, will be in good general health and will exhibit naturally occurring (plaque-induced) gingivitis but no evidence of periodontitis. Procedures (methods): This study will involve induction of experimental gingivitis in healthy volunteers. Participants will be seen at the study center for twelve hours (8 visits) over a nine week time period. Following a one-week standard hygiene phase, participants will abstain from brushing and flossing teeth in one half of their mouths during a three week, no hygiene phase via placement of acrylic stents. Thereafter, participants will reinstate normal full mouth oral hygiene, daily plaque control and will be followed for four weeks during gingivitis resolution. Prophylaxis with scaling and root planing will be performed at exit as needed.
