COHORT STUDY OF CANDIDATE PREDICTOR BIOMARKERS IN EXPERIMENTAL GINGIVITIS SUBJEC

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this research is to find new markers for gum (periodontal) disease that will help identify who is at risk for gum disease. Fifteen participants will be asked to not clean half of their mouth for 4 weeks, so they will develop a mild form of gum disease call "gingivitis". A dental hygienist will complete a full mouth debridement at the end of the study to remove disease causing bacteria. During the course of the study, regular oral exams will be done and samples of gum tissue, saliva, gum fluid, dental plaque and blood will be taken and analyzed in the laboratory.
