This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. This is an 8-center, investigator-initiated, randomized clinical trial to test the effects of pioglitazone vs. placebo on diabetes incident rates, pancreatic b-cell function, carotid atherosclerosis and risk factors for atherosclerosis in adults with insulin resistance and impaired glucose tolerance. Dr. Buchanan was instrumental in the study design. USC is planned to enroll and study 75 of the total 600 subjects.
