This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Whether exposure to cocaine in the womb affects chidren's learning abilities and behavior in family and school is a question of major public policy concern. With very little data, drastic claims have been made that these children are irrecovably disabled and incapable of normal learning and behavior. However, most of these claims ignore the importance of a child's environment in determining outcome. The goal of the project DA 06532 is to gather credible scientific data regarding what are and are not the real problems of children with exposure to cocaine in the womb. Currently, this longitudinal grant is assessing the potential multidimentional effects of in utero cocaine exposure upon children born at term from birth to 10.5 years. This extension of the current grant intends to folow the same group of children through adolescence (12 years - 18 years). This project has two major goals. The first is to evaluate whether, after potentially confounding biologic and social variables are controlled statiscally, there are independent relationships between level of in utero cocaine exposure (none, light, heavy) and selected developmental and socio-affective outcomes which are only clearly emerging in middle childhood and cannot be definitively assessed at earlier ages. the second goal is to use this rich longitudinal data set to identify historical and concurrent biologic and social factors, which in interaction with level of cocaine exposure, differentiate children who do and do not show adverse outcomes in neuropsychological, emotional and behavioral domains in adolescent years. Few preliminary data are available for cocaine exposed children in adolescence. We therefore propose two sets of specific aims. The first set is comprised of directional hypotheses based on findings in this sample and others at earlier ages. The second set is exploratory, designed to gather accurate descriptive data in uncharted areas, where there has been extensive speculation that prenatal cocaine exposure may have an impact, but little data exists.
