MULTI-CENTER STUDY OF HYDROXYUREA IN SICKLE CELL ANEMIA (MSH) PATIENTS FOLLOW

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. There are three specific aims to this multi-center study of hydroxyurea in sickle cell anemia. The first aim is to identify newly arising serious medical conditions and progressive impairment or failure of specific organs or systems. The second aim is to assess all cause of mortality and classify birth defects occuring in the offspring of patients since enrollment in the MSH. The third aim is to assess the quality of life for the patients. The MSH was designed to test whether hydroxyurea reduced the incidence of vaso-occlusive episodes in sickle-cell anemia and not to detect differences in mortality between treatment groups. Patients must meet only one inclusion criteria, a history of enrollment in the MSH.
