英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. We are conducting a research study to determine the effects of reproductive hormones (estrogen and progesterone). Reproductive hormone levels go down with age. The number of calories burned at rest (resting energy expenditure) also decreases with age and this may weight gain. The purpose of this study is to find out whether the decrease in sex hormones causes the decrease in energy expenditure. In this study we will lower normal levels of reproductive hormones in premenopausal women to levels similar to those of postmenopausal women using the drug Cetrotide. We will then measure resting energy expenditure to determine whether low estrogen and progesterone levels affect the number of calories burned at rest. Measurements of nervous system activity will also be made to determine how reproductive hormones might mediate changes in energy expenditure. Finally, we will replace either estrogen or progesterone in subjects for five days and then re-measure resting energy expenditure and nervous system activity to determine the individual effects of each hormone on the body's ability to burn calories.
